NOVEL APPROACHES TO DISEASE PREVENTION

Both social, environmental and behavioral factors affecting one's overall health are increasingly being included in policy-making on behalf of the entire population. Community-initiated solutions will significantly reduce the overall burden of disease through community-based interventions such as physical activity through urban design, nutrition regulations, workplace safety, and the regulation of air quality. Given that mental health is directly related to overall wellness, preventive and promotional activities surrounding mental health will continue to gain popularity. Currently, examples of preventive strategies include the use of education and digital messages to manage stress, build resilience, and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness. Integration of primary, specialty, and preventive services allows for greater continuity in care and better management of co-morbid conditions through the use of integrated health delivery systems.
Using predictive modelling and data driven surveillance are becoming more common, enabling better identification of novel health threats and faster preventive measures. This cluster of new approaches to preventive health represents a shift toward proactive, interdisciplinary, and sustainable strategies to prevent disease. When combined with innovative technological advancements and both social and behavioural interventions, these contemporary preventive strategies could hold significant potential for reducing costs associated with Health Care, improving population-level Health Outcomes, and addressing the many complex challenges posed by communicable and non-communicable diseases of the 21st century.
